Frequently asked questions
Q: Do I or my child/young person need to have an “official” autism/ADHD/dyslexia diagnosis to receive support from Autistically Brilliant?
A: No. You or your child/young person don't need a diagnosis, as I believe that self-identified/diagnosed neurodivergence is entirely valid.
Q: I am not sure if I/my partner/my child is neurodivergent. Do you work with people who are trying to work this out?
A: I absolutely do. I can help people, who want to make sense of their experiences and identify possible neurodivergent traits. I can also guide those who want to embark on the diagnostic pathway and I can answer any questions related to the process with regard to different age groups, as well as public health and private options.
Q: Do you work with people from other countries?
A: Yes, and I am flexible with different time zones. However, please do get in touch with me to ask about your particular country/state, as, unfortunately, not all are possible (due to legal and insurance issues).
Q: How do I know if counselling or art psychotherapy is right for me or my child/young person?
A: I offer a free 15 min introductory online meeting (e.g. Zoom) or phone call, during which we can briefly explore our potential work together, so you/they can decide where to go from there. There is no obligation at all attached.
Q: I or my child/young person do not want to appear on camera/speak over Zoom or telephone. Is there a way that you can accommodate these needs?
A: I can work in various ways to accommodate most needs. For example, we can use Zoom with you or your chid/young person’s camera off. I have also used WhatsApp/texting as the sole way to communicate during sessions. We can change the way we communicate at any point, as you or your child/young person become more comfortable with me and the sessions, or we can stick with being off camera/texting, if this seems the best solution.
Q: Can you see me or my child/young person face to face?
A: Unfortunately this is not an option, at the moment, as I do not have physical premises. I will communicate any potential change to this on my website and on directories.
Q: How many sessions will I have and will I be tied to a contract for a certain amount of sessions?
A: You can have as few or as many sessions you would like and/or require, as I do not have a “one size fits all” approach. There will be a basic contract drawn up for our work (mentioning such issues as confidentiality, boundaries, payment details, etc.), but this does not obligate you to have any number of sessions or tie you in for any period of time, as you can end sessions at any point you like.
Q: I have a question that is not listed here.
A: Please contact me through the form on the website or email me directly at autisticallybrilliant@gmail.com. I am more than happy to answer any questions and/or address any worries you might have about counselling/art psychotherapy or parenting support. I endeavour to answer all queries within 48 hours, but can often respond much sooner than that. We can also set up a free 15 min online meeting/phone call to help you decide whether you would like to work with me. There is absolutely no obligation attached to this introductory meeting. I always give you space to make a decision in your own time.
