Counselling

Counselling with me is neuro- and LGBTQIA+ affirming, trauma informed, as well as positive and empowering. It offers a safe, warm, non-judgemental and confidential space to process and work through the past, as well as plan and work on change.

We begin by identifying your mental health related objectives, such as being less anxious, coming into terms with and/or understanding your (self)diagnosis, managing stress better or being more assertive. We will concentrate on your interests and strengths, as well as your needs and preferences, making sure that we work in a way that is effective and sustainable for you.

I have a wide knowledge, as well as experience base (please see the “About me” section for more details) to draw from. Therefore, I can work with a wide range of people, in all kinds of life stages and situations, and with most kinds of mental health problems (spanning from anxiety, low mood, mood swings, low self confidence and rumination, to grief, sensory overwhelm, frequent meltdowns/shutdowns, as well as issues related to relationships and/or school/college/university/work, etc.). Many of my clients are late diagnosed, and are thus also processing how to integrate their neurodivergence with their identities.

I work in a way that enables my clients to feel validated and heard, as well as helping them gain self-knowledge and ways to manage their problems. As an Art Psychotherapist, I often (when appropriate and agreed on) also use some creative methods in my counselling practice. This can help my clients approach their problems in a different, personal and potentially more effective, way.

I am passionate about supporting and empowering my clients to find their voices, and become more assertive through encouraging this in sessions. Having practiced assertiveness in sessions, the clients can then transfer this pactice to the "outside world", perhaps finally finding the courage to ask for adjustments at work, or setting and upholding healthy boundaries with family members.

Research shows that a good relationship between the counsellor and client is the most important factor in the success of counselling. Therefore, I aim to cultivate a honest, warm and cooperative relationship with my clients. I see counselling/therapy as being a dialogue between two (or more) equals, due to the client being an expert in their own issues. This expertise is essential in deciding on what approach to take in the work.

At the moment, I work exclusively online or on the phone, but we can use the communication method easiest for you: Zoom, telephone, text/instant messaging/email, or a mix of these (as/when appropriate).

I don't require an “official diagnosis” to work with you, or your child/young person. This is due to me viewing self identification/diagnosis as entirely valid.

In order to be the most effective, counselling should ideally place weekly, but we can also consider other intervals.
